Reducing Anxiety of Coronavirus: Facts and Less Media Go a Long Way

If you have turned on the news or radio in the past couple of weeks, you have undoubtedly heard the word “coronavirus.” With constant reports that the virus has spread to this or that country, health organizations are scrambling to trace the spread, quarantines of cruise ships, and a rising death toll, it would seem almost impossible not to worry about the strange new virus going around the globe. So how does one stay safe in the midst of coronavirus panic without letting anxiety turning them into an agoraphobe?

What is the Coronavirus?
While news reports typically just say “the coronavirus,” the virus currently spreading is merely one out of a group of viruses known as coronaviruses. Because it was previously unidentified, it is sometimes referred to as the novel (new) coronavirus or 2019-nCoV. More recently, it was given the name SARS-CoV-2. If the SARS portion of that looks familiar, it is because in 2003 a similar virus called SARS-CoV, another coronavirus commonly referred to as SARS, was in the headlines. The coronavirus currently spreading is causing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Where Does the Coronavirus Rank Among Other Outbreaks?

In comparison to other notable outbreaks, COVID-19 has a relatively low fatality rate. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported a 40 percent fatality rate for the last Ebola outbreak. During the last SARS (another coronavirus) outbreak, 774 people died out of a total of 8,098 that were infected for a fatality rate just below 10%. Another coronavirus, MERS, had a fatality rate around 30 percent when it killed 858 of 2,494 of the individuals who were infected with it. COVID-19’s fatality rate ranges from 2 to 3.5 percent depending on the source. Some reports think that this might be a high estimate as more and more non-fatal cases are discovered.

Is it Really Worth the Anxiety?

Reports of face masks and hand sanitizers selling out due to the coronavirus indicate that people are anxious about the virus. Is the coronavirus worth the worry and anxiety that a lot of people seem to be feeling? How do you stop anxiety from spiraling out of control regarding the coronavirus? First, look at the facts.

Rely on Facts to Reduce Your Anxiety

While media reports would have people thinking that there is a world ending global pandemic at this point, the fact of the matter is that the coronavirus is not any worse than any previous virus outbreak. Looking at the statistics, there is really no need to be anxious. The fatality rate is much lower than other coronavirus outbreaks in the past. Additionally, every year a virus known as the flu comes around. Since October of 2019, an estimated 45 million Americans were infected with the flu with over 46,000 of those infections ending in death. Perspective shows that every year we deal with much more infectious and much more deadly viruses without a high-level anxiety.

Step Away from Media Reports

Remember that fear and outrage sell much more than the full truth. Constantly hearing of the coronavirus showing up in a new country, another death, or any of the other repeated headlines only achieves the goal of increasing worry. This is a profit tactic of media corporations. The most important information is often left out. Take the example of Dr. Craig Spencer. In 2014, he became the first person in New York City to be diagnosed with the Ebola virus. He was vilified by the media, public, and politicians for being in public after returning from West Africa where he had been treating Ebola patients. The thing that was left out of all the reports and criticism of Dr. Spencer…Ebola was not contagious until symptoms arise and he had already gone into quarantine at the first sign of symptoms.

Surviving a Chemical Attack

Chemical agents, including vapors liquids, aerosols, and solids will have a toxic effect on other people. They can be released in bombs, or even sprayed from boats, vehicles, or aircraft.  They are oftentimes used as a liquid to help create a hazard for the environment. Other times, they’re used to combat attacks from disease and viruses, such as in the case of the coronavirus. They usually are tasteless and odorless, and they can have both an immediate and a delayed effect of up to 48 hours.

While they are lethal and harmful, usually, they’re very hard to deliver in lethal concentrations, since it’s very hard to keep it at a lethal level in the outdoors.  But, they are still dangerous, since they come without warning, and it can cause issues with breathing, losing coordination, nausea, and of course, a burning sensation in your nose, lungs, and throat, and of course, it might also affect you in other ways, especially if you have asthma or other respiratory conditions. Usually, you can see these in the form of dead insects or birds.

So how do you prepare for something that’s usually not redetermined? Well, before you a chemical attack, you need to have a roll of duct tape and scissors in your bag, plastic for your windows, vents and doors.  You may want to plastic sheet every opening too. You should also choose an internal room without windows and is on a higher level.

During this, you should turn off all ventilation, and also make sure to close every door and window. Turn off the A/C, furnace, and of course, vents and fans. You should seek shelter in a room without windows and with a disaster supplies kit. Seal the room with plastic sheeting and duct tape if there are windows or orifices.  You should then get your radio out and listen to instructions from the authorities.

If you’re in a contaminated area, move in an upwind from the source, and find shelter as fast as you can.

What do you do after a chemical attack? Well, decontamination is needed, since within minutes of exposure you will have health issues. Don’t’ leave the shelter safety in order to go outdoors until the authorities say so. It can be different for everyone, and you should make sure you decontaminate yourself before helping others.

Always use extreme caution when dealing with those exposed to agents. From there, removal all clothing and other items on the body.  You should remove them off your body not over your head, but instead, cut them apart. Put them in a plastic bag to seal it, then decontaminate with soap and water. Remove glasses and contact lenses, making sure that the glasses are put in a bag with blech then rinse and dry.

Flush your eyes with water, wash your face ad hair with soap, and then water before rinsing thoroughly. You should make sure to blot and scrape other contaminated areas. Finally, change into uncontaminated clothes, and from there, move to a medical facility for further treatment

With all of this in place, you should be able to survive even the worst of all chemical attacks, and you’ll be able to, with this as well, ensure your own safety, and make it possible for you to have a better experience. It can be a scary thing, and sometimes chemicals are used to help decontaminate areas, but they’re harmful to humans. Always use caution when chemicals are involved, since you never know how much of this it can affect in the long haul.

Emergency Kits 101

You’ve seen this on the news during natural disasters, where grocery stores are picked clean of pretty much everything, where people are desperate to get the last pack of batteries. While it is hard to look at, you can actually avoid this scenario.  If you’re the kind of person who likes to stay on top of everything, we’ll tell you how to started, and a few tips to help you get started right now, so you’re on top of it all

First you may wonder where to begin. You might look at who the kit is for, and the kinds of emergencies that’ll affect you. You should consider the people, and the animals you’ll need a survival kit for, and of course, how many things you must buy. A survival kit for a couple versus  child will be very different in type.

Next, you’ll want to look at what kind of emergency you’re expecting. For example, if you live along the coastline, you’ve got to worry about flooding. In the Midwest, it’s more tornados and potentially earthquakes. You should prepare for those.  Does the emergency usually require you to stay, or will you need to evacuate? You may want to consider a portable evacuation kit for when you have to get on the road. If not, you may be able to have a little bit more prepared, since it isn’t limited by your movement.  Usually, most people aren’t prepared for this, but if you take the time to sit down and make sure that you have enough, you’ll be much happier.

So what are the essentials? Well first and foremost, is water. You need minimally one gallon of clean water on hand for a person each day, for both drinking water, and of course, sanitation as well. You can reuse different bottles and fill them, or you can get water from the store. If you’re making a survival kit for evacuation, you really shouldn’t bring too much.  You should consider a portable water filtering straw, since it’s small, packable, and lightweight too, and you can take them anywhere, and use them to drink from a water source.

Next is food. You need food.  You should consider some easy to eat foods, and some sustainable foods. You should keep foods on hand that you’ll eat though, since eating foods that you don’t like will make this worse. You should expand your kit to get meals which are hot, canned foods, or inexpensive foods, or you can get a freeze-dried meal pouch for a more lighter option that’s incredibly portable. Ration bars are usually the easiest to toss. You should replace them often, and use them when you’re just living, so that you’re not wasting money.

Finally, light and communication. Cell phones can only go so far, since towers do go down in big emergencies. An NAA radio is great because you can be informed of changes too. You should, however, consider some lights, candles, a charger, and also reducing the number of electronics.  You should also consider some combination items for those instances.  You should make sure that you also consider some LED power failure lights so that if the power goes out, they automatically work.

With the way emergencies happen, you honestly can never be too prepared, and most don’t realize how impactful this can be. Doing this will in turn help you improve your life, and make it so that you’re able to improve and increase your ability to handle this, and make it work in your own personal benefit as well.

How to Store Grains for the Long Term

While paleo dieters will argue that you shouldn’t consume grains because it’s not good enough for the digestive system to adapt, grains are still something that you should always consider having. People have been eating this for hundreds of years, and in many cases, they’re even found millennia ago.  So, they’re not as bad as people make them out to be.

They’re good for you especially during emergencies, and if you’re thinking about storing grains in a food pantry, or even just for a moment, you may want to look into different ways to do this.  You should select the grains with the longest shelf life first, storing them properly. Brown rice and barley are usually the best ones to avoid, since they actually can go bad very fast.  usually, 4-6 months is the average lifespan, so if you feel you’re going to use it, then you may want to get it. Otherwise, go for a different type o grain.

Soft grains are usually the best to start with. This includes quinoa, hulled oats, and also rye.  You should try to get this, and you can even make them last up to two decades if you do this correctly.

Buckwheat, flax, corn, and mullet wand wheat are usually considered the hard grains.  You can get about a decade of shelf life out of these bad boys too, but, if you do have a good setup for this, it can last up to 30 years, or much longer in many cases too. Definitely worth checking out.

Now, how do you store these? Well, buying a sack and tossing it into your pantry isn’t the best way to store this. You should get a food-grade bucket, a vacuum sealer or a health sealer, some 5-gallon storage bags, and also some oxygen absorbers.  You should consider buying these in bulk, and make sure that you get the food grade buckets. Mylar is the best source of material, since this is something that’s often found in many local restaurants, or you can even just buy these online. You’ll need some buckets from your hardware store too, if you don’t want to spend the money, just make sure they’re food grade.

First, you want to find some good places to store this, making sure it doesn’t get higher than 68 degrees in that area. Put the Mylar bag on that, and fill it with grain. Add an oxygen absorbing pack, and have that seal the air out of the bag, and seal it out with a heat sealer.

From there, you trim any of the excess off the top area of your mylar bag, and from there, seal the lid on this with a mallet made of rubber.

This is the best way to do it, but if you’re struggling with this, consider practicing on this with a dummy package before you get the real thing, and you should make sure to avoid overly exposing the absorbing packs to air, since it decreases the effectiveness, and you can even put another oxygen absorber in the bucket too for best results.

How to Protect Food Storage from Flooding

Getting your food storage in order can be a lot, and if you have a larger family, this can be a problem. Even when stocking up on basics is something that you’re going to need to invest in, and it can cost a lot of money. But, what happens if the disaster you were preparing for wipes out your food storage as well. A bucket of wheat that’s flooded won’t help you, and it feels like a double loss in those cases. There is no way to completely prevent this, and you can only do what you like and then prepare for the best, and here, we’ll discuss some preparatory steps to help minimize the damage to your food storage items as well.

First, is don’t assume it’ll never happened.  This can happen anytime, anywhere, and even if your home is outside the flood plain, rain gutters and water heaters can leak.

Next, perform maintenance on your home, and clean out the rain gutters, affixing the extenders to the down spouts in order to keep the water away from the window wells. A few years of rain can cause clogging, and the water will seep through the seal around windows to the flooded areas of the basement. Always be aware of the arrangements of the city, and make sure to work on runoff water that you find in your city’s municipal plan when there is flooding that’s imminent. You should make sure that your water heater works too, and you should make sure that you replace this every decade or so.

Next, look at storing the items correctly, and try to keep them out of the basement.  Sometimes, simple shelving works too, and if the flooding is only a few inches, try to keep everything off the floor so it’s not in a puddle. Try to use plastic containers for everything too.

After a flood, insurance companies will declare items a total loss, but that shouldn’t stop you from looking at the food items and checking. Sometimes, you may get lucky, and if you have retort pouches, this can withstand flooding. If you are worried about bacterial contamination from floodwater, boil this before you eat in order to kill every single germ that’s out there.

Finally, if you’ve lost everything, you should try to rebuild this.  It does happen, and while it stinks, you should try to save as much as you can.

You’ll be amazed at how much you can put together again.  You’ll be amazed at how helpful this can be, and who knows, maybe down the road if someone else has actually experienced this kind of thing, you’ll be able to work on trying to put your food storage back into place. It isn’t easy, and it can be quite troublesome too.

These steps will help with minimizing the damage on small-scale flooding. Even if you do lose it, try not to panic, but try to work on getting everything back that you can. Even if you feel like the preparations created a total loss, you might be able to fall back onto this later on, and you’ll be able to use your food storage efforts for good in the future as well.

Bush Fire Safety

With everything that’s happenin Australia, it’s very important to ensure that you know how to survive a bushfire, since they can take place in dry conditions.  You need to of course prepare in advance for the threat, since if you make the decisions too late, you’ll have much fewer options left.

Now, you need to follow three things: prepare, act, and then survive.

To prepare, you should first and foremost have a fire safety survival plan, since it’ll let you have a safer experience, and you can figure out what to do before you have to face a bush fire.

You should make sure that you have a plan for clearing around the house, and you should look at the physical, emotional, and mental preparedness, since you should make sure that everyone is prepared for this.

Also, regardless of your decision to leave early or defend it, you should take the proper steps for the threat of this.

Now, let’s talk action. The higher the fire danger, the worse it can become.  You should look at the official fire ratings, since this will tell you whether you need to get out of there, or whether you might be okay. During the increased periods of danger, you should always try to make sure you stay in the know of any of the ratings, whether they change or not.  You should definitely look at this, and always make sure that you keep in the know on this.

Finally, you need to survive.  You should look at your survival plan. At first, it’ll have an advice, and then a watch, and then an act, and learn the emergency warning. As soon as you see this, you should decide if it’s possible to leave early, or defend the home. The safest option is to always leave early, since plans don’t always follow what you have in mind, and you should always have a backup as needed. There are safe places that you can use for this reason, and make sure that you have this as a part of your bush fire survival plan.

During this, make sure that you have access to items that’ll save your life, and from there, you can find out what you should do with all of these too.

The extreme heat can kill you, just as much as the embers and smoke can.  You should make sure you keep this in mind when you’re trying to survive a bush fire.

You should always stay up to date on all of this, and you should make sure that everyone is in place, and a plan is in action. If you follow this, it could save your life, and the lives of others.  There are some firefighters that might be able to help, but the thing, is they honestly can’t sometimes fully control this. You need to figure out whether or not you should stay, or if you should leave early.

Remember, these situations can be terrifying, and you should understand that the flames, the gusty winds, and the intense heat will tire you out.  The smoke will hurt the eyes and lungs, and it’s difficult for you to do.  there is also the roaring sound of this, and the embers will rain down upon you. Power and water is usually cut off, so you’ll be isolated.  It definitely is a scary thing, and if you can’t cope with that, you should always make sure you get away. Always have protective clothing if you do intend to stay.

They are scary, so make sure you plan accordingly.

How to Protect Your Gear from EMP

One of the scarier aspects of survival is when you have a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse, which is called HEMP. The nuclear weapons that are produced all contain electromagnetic pulses, or EMP, but usually, they are so massive that they’ll knock out all electronics, and many power grids that exist within our country. Because of this, you need to consider EMP protection for your electronics. But, how do you do it? Why should you do it? Read below to understand.

While there have been different venues to use this, you need to understand the physics behind this, and some of the science behind an EMP attack.

The first thing that you need to understand is that currently there is a lack of information that’s there about EMP, and the effects that are there. Most of what we know is from the 1960s, and the testing. The information on this is highly classified, so you have to go with the declassified information that you can get. but the thing is, the information is actually sufficient to make projections which are reasonable.

The second thing to learn is that this type of attack is actually as bad as it would get. Almost all people would be dead after an EMP attack, about 90% of these people, especially since we have extreme dependence on electricity, and the delocalization of food, water, and sanitation. It is survivable, but you have to prepare for it right way. Unlike other disasters, there isn’t a warning or anything, since it can be instant, and the lights go out forever.

Another event is the coronal mass ejection, or the CME, which can take out full power grids. When you have plasma particles that are very charged on the surface of your sun, and they crash into the magnetosphere of the earth, it creates an electrical current in the lines and metal, like your pipes and wires. This alone can destroy the transformers that you need for power emission, and it will wipe out the ability for this to remain operation. But, this doesn’t destroy electronic devices currently, unless they’re connected.

The best way to protect it is a faraday cage, and this is a simple little device that protects your electronics, simply by preventing these waves from getting inside. Usually, the more expensive units will use a combination of copper and aluminum mesh. You can build your own with foil, and a galvanized steel trash can. This doesn’t of course, have to look like a cage, but instead it’s anything that you make which blocks this radiation.

You shouldn’t put this in a microwave oven or a Mylar bag, and it is skeptical at best to try this. Usually, the MEP frequencies is of course, AM to Approximately FM radio, since the EMP frequencies have a much broader level, but tis comparison is enough. Usually, they’re as low as 540 KHz and the FM band stops at around 1-08 MHz, and you should make sure that you have this container in place, since the best to set up. You should tune to a station and turn it up. Put it in a cage, and from there, test to see if it’s still being picked up. Don’t be shocked if it doesn’t, since the FM signals are easy to shield. You can then test it with AM, since they can still get the signals pretty well. If you can’t hear the AM station at all, that’s fine, especially since you want it to be a good faraday cage to keep those electromagnetic signals away. You may wonder why it’s important to protect your electronics. Well, in an instance of EMP, it can save you, since you can communicate, and give you a major tactical advantage. You also can hold a lot of information in this, and you can hold onto valuable information even in a blackout.

Why a Smoke Shield Will Help Your home

When you’re expecting nothing, usually the worst happens.

Sometimes, when your’ e at home, you may smell something burning, and you might want to look at your home. If you notice a smoky haze, then you should definitely call 911.

House fires happen when you least expect them, and they’re’ e something that you’re not ready for. The normalcy of life will reassure that everything is fine, but the thing is, if you’re not ready for this, it can be quite frustrating, and it may put you in danger.

Sleeping is usually when these occur, and they are one of the most deadly factors in fatalities during house fires. If you’re not careful, it could end up burning down your home, or worse.

You might think that your smoke detector will save you, but the thing is, if the electric goes out, you’re in trouble. That’s why a smoke shield came in handy for those who have suffered from fires. It will help with any instance of smoke alarms failing.

So what happens when these fail? While they are a big part of the house, they are susceptible to not working correctly, or the batteries may die. Smoke alarms aren’t perfect, which is why a smoke shield is the better option, especially if you’re not careful.

A smoke shield will definitely help in many cases, especially if you know that the electric is about to go out.

The sheet rock in your home has a 30-minute burn rating, and it’s got two layers for an hour of it. All of your modern interior doors have a 30-45 minute rating for burning. It actually could save your life if you close the door. This is something that you should consider. However, while it protects you from the fire, it doesn’t protect you from the smoke. This can slow down the rate of smoke, but it still seeps in. smoke shields are one of the handiest things to have.

This is something that allows for you to have a shield in place, and it’ll activate once smoke is present. It will filter the air, helping you have safe breathing air within the confines of different spaces.

Escaping fires is your best option, but the thing is, if you’re unable to do that, and you need help, this might be the best option.

The best way for you to escape a fire is to get out as soon as you can, but if you’re someone who doesn’t’ have the ability to do this, then you should definitely consider the smoke shield, especially since it’ll help provide that extra layer of safety.

This also is good because it will help with those instances of you notice there is smoke, but you don’t know how to get out of there. There is a lot that can happen when you’re in a fire, and if you’re in a deadly situation, this is one of the best things for you to have in place, since most people don’t’ realize the impact this can have on you.

Consider a smoke shield today, for your own personal safety and health is at risk, and it can provide that extra valuable time as much as you can.

The Best Emergency Survival Tips

In life, disasters happen at any point, and you may end up with various tools and necessitates for survival.  It can impact anyone from a single-family home, to even the entire state. The cause of this is natural disasters, such as various weather issues. However, power outages and fires might also have a bearing in this too. Here, we’ll tell you about some tips and essentials for staying prepared, and how to do it.

First, you’ve got to store the standards supplies.  You need flashlights, along with a battery-operated radio for best results. You should keep supplies of other batteries within the kit, and you can get a hand-cranked radio instead of you don’t want to rely on batteries.  It should also have a whistle in order to get the attention of those responders. While cell phone towers might be overloaded or down during weather disasters, keeping a phone charge is good because you can use it for taking pictures, video recordings of your home for insurance companies, or even if you want to record events that are happening. You should also make sure that you have blankets, sheeting that’s plastic, along with protective masks and other items that are necessary, such as matches, garbage bags, clothing that’s extra, and other small items such as money.

You should also consider food storage. In the event of emergencies, you should have a couple of days of supplies of food for everyone within your home. You should make sure that you get non-perishables that won’t expire for a long time. Dry cereals, dried fruits and nuts, powdered milk or shelf-stable milk, and crackers too are important. Foods that provide energy boosts are also important to have in your hand, such as high-energy foods including peanut butter and granola.

You should choose canned foods over foods in pouches, since they last much longer.  You should make sure that you have canned foods in order to provide strength and health, and you should try to store items as canned if you can.  If you need anything however, you should have water. Everyone needs about a gallon a day in order to last about three days or even longer.  You should make sure to never forget powdered formula, pet food, or other items too.  You should also make sure to have a can opener, for the obvious opening of these.

Finally, you need to make sure that you have an emergency plan for how you’re going to handle an emergency.  You should make sure that you commit to the plan, but also practice it in order to respond to actual emergency situations. Communication is a key part of it, since it is possible for families to feel safe ad assured. You should make sure that you agree on places to meet, the out-of-town contacts, and who you should contact locally if you’re unable to get to another person. You should also consider the types of disasters that are most likely to happen, and also research the ways to prepare for any events that occur right before then, during, and also after disasters. Evacuation plans should also be established in events such as fires at houses, and make sure that you have two escape routes within each room if you can, and you should make sure that it’s all fine-tuned in order to reduce the injury or loss of life during events. You should print out actual response plans for the family members to keep secure.

These are all different emergency response means, and you should always, if at all possible, ensure that you have this in place, since it’ll help you with improving on your home, and the different aspects of life too.

How to Prepare for an Earthquake

How do you prepare for an earthquake? Well, you should start doing so now. the supplies that you need are pretty simple, but you should have enough to last about three or so days. Here are some of the most important things to have when preparing for this.

First, you need a first aid kit. This is very important especially if you’re in an area hit by these a lot, since they end up creating a lot of problems over time.  You should make sure that you keep it in a tackle box, and include hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting wounds, ointment that’s antibiotic, alcohol swabs, prescriptions for long-term medications, medicine for diarrhea, eye drops, and aspirin and various dressing. You can get one of those basic first aid kits if you don’t’ feel like taking a ton of time to put this together.

Next, let’s talk a survival kit.  In earthquake situations, there are a few things that you should make sure that you have. For starts, an ae, broom or shovel to get through debris is important. Sometimes, you might have to take things apart, so make sure that you have pliers, a screwdriver, and a wrench that’s adjustable. Some pocket knives are great for this, since it kind of includes everything.

You should also have plastic sheeting tape, since it allows for you to protect various areas from the elements. Finally, you should use rope for rescue and towing, since there is a lot that might happen, and you should make sure you’re ready to rescue others.

When it comes to earthquakes, there are a few thing that’ll help with comfort and safety.  Here are some items that might help.

First, get those shoes so that they’re sturdy, and give protection from glass, debris, nails, and other items that can potentially hurt your feet.

You also should get some gloves, especially heavy duty, but latex ones for biohazards are important too.  Supplies to keep you occupied are good too. Blankets and sleeping bags are good too especially if you need to sit in spaces for a while.

A portable radio that either uses batteries, or a hand crank is important. That way, you won’t have to worry about potentially running out of juice when you need it most.  You also might want to check for any medication s and glasses you need.

You should make sure that you have glasses and medications too, especially if you know that there is a chance that the power might go out.

As for food, you should get some canned items.  The canned good s are good because of the different issues that can come out, and there is a lot that you should figure out as well.

Finally, also consider making yourself a survival kit for your car.  This can include a whistle signals, premoistened towelettes, emergency signal devices, and other cables and such to help with this.  You never know when you might have an earthquake, and sometimes, these will happen when you’re not at home.  You don’t want to be caught in this, right?

When it comes to earthquakes, I’s very hard to tell when they’re going to occur, but with the right items, and the right planning, you’ll be happy you did this, and there is a lot that you can benefit from, and a lot that will help you. Your survival matters so always make sure that you properly plan for the future ahead of time, and work towards ensuring that you do it correctly.
