How to Prepare for an Earthquake

How do you prepare for an earthquake? Well, you should start doing so now. the supplies that you need are pretty simple, but you should have enough to last about three or so days. Here are some of the most important things to have when preparing for this.

First, you need a first aid kit. This is very important especially if you’re in an area hit by these a lot, since they end up creating a lot of problems over time.  You should make sure that you keep it in a tackle box, and include hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting wounds, ointment that’s antibiotic, alcohol swabs, prescriptions for long-term medications, medicine for diarrhea, eye drops, and aspirin and various dressing. You can get one of those basic first aid kits if you don’t’ feel like taking a ton of time to put this together.

Next, let’s talk a survival kit.  In earthquake situations, there are a few things that you should make sure that you have. For starts, an ae, broom or shovel to get through debris is important. Sometimes, you might have to take things apart, so make sure that you have pliers, a screwdriver, and a wrench that’s adjustable. Some pocket knives are great for this, since it kind of includes everything.

You should also have plastic sheeting tape, since it allows for you to protect various areas from the elements. Finally, you should use rope for rescue and towing, since there is a lot that might happen, and you should make sure you’re ready to rescue others.

When it comes to earthquakes, there are a few thing that’ll help with comfort and safety.  Here are some items that might help.

First, get those shoes so that they’re sturdy, and give protection from glass, debris, nails, and other items that can potentially hurt your feet.

You also should get some gloves, especially heavy duty, but latex ones for biohazards are important too.  Supplies to keep you occupied are good too. Blankets and sleeping bags are good too especially if you need to sit in spaces for a while.

A portable radio that either uses batteries, or a hand crank is important. That way, you won’t have to worry about potentially running out of juice when you need it most.  You also might want to check for any medication s and glasses you need.

You should make sure that you have glasses and medications too, especially if you know that there is a chance that the power might go out.

As for food, you should get some canned items.  The canned good s are good because of the different issues that can come out, and there is a lot that you should figure out as well.

Finally, also consider making yourself a survival kit for your car.  This can include a whistle signals, premoistened towelettes, emergency signal devices, and other cables and such to help with this.  You never know when you might have an earthquake, and sometimes, these will happen when you’re not at home.  You don’t want to be caught in this, right?

When it comes to earthquakes, I’s very hard to tell when they’re going to occur, but with the right items, and the right planning, you’ll be happy you did this, and there is a lot that you can benefit from, and a lot that will help you. Your survival matters so always make sure that you properly plan for the future ahead of time, and work towards ensuring that you do it correctly.

Emergency Preparedness Tips You May Not Know

Being prepared for disasters is very important, however, it’s not always just doomsday prepping, there are a few ways for you to realistically prepare for anything that can disrupt life in any way. Here are some emergency preparedness tips that can help you out in a time of need.

First, make sure you have emergency alerts set up. While you may want to watch the news and such when things are bad, having a cell phone and other alerts are good to have. However, you might need to manually set it up.

You can also get an email alert system put in place, which will help you set up warnings by either email or text, and lets you determine all of the different alerts that you want to have and everything at hand. It’s really convenient and really helpful to do as well.

You should also look at different places where you can get local emergency notifications. For example, you can simply google where you can get the emergency alert signups, and you can also look at your local public safety office. Also, make sure you’re not the only person getting alerts. That way, you’re all on top of what’s happening and kept safe.

Next, establish multiple spots to meet up. These can be in or outside the home, but you should also have an indoor meeting spot in your home, a neighborhood meeting spot in the event you’re all separated. You should also have a regional meeting spot where those that are in different locations but the same place can meet up. Finally, you should have a meeting spot for out of town emergencies, such as those for evacuations. That way, if you do have to travel to the next place over, you can do this quite easily. It will help immensely when you’re trying to ensure you have everyone accounted for, and to keep everyone nice and safe.

Then, have a family communication plan in place. You can have this out there in the event you lose your family, and you need someone to find them. These are great since you can get them from the CDC with various aspects to help with this. You can get contact information, insurance information, work and school information, and also additional contacts in the event you’re all separated and you need a way to get in touch. This contact form could inevitably save your life, so it’s important to consider this.

You can even make trees of your contact information, which is great if you have this kind of issue or maybe you have a lot of people in your area you’re close to.

Finally, make sure everyone in the home carries an in case of emergency, or ICE card. This is important in the event you’re hurt. This should have your name, gender, blood type, and very important medical information including allergies or prescriptions that you take. It should also include one more emergency contact, and you can even generate free tools to print one of these. You can make a couple of these, for the bags and for your car, and you can even get the AAA template to help with this. There are also health apps, like the one on the iPhone, which lets you list all of your vital medical information. This is essential, since it will help you in the event that there is a dire emergency.

When you read about preparing, these tips will help make it worth your while, and make emergency preparedness even better for you as well.

The Best Emergency Preparedness Supplies

Now that emergency preparedness is happening all over, people want checklists of what they need. However, these can be intimidating, and in reality, for most of this you’ll need to put tighter an emergency kit of things you already have, but there are some ways for you to stock up on the gear that you have, and we’ll tell you here what the best thing to do at this point is. Here, we’ll highlight the best products that you should have for an everyday situation, and as well for natural disasters

For those starting from scratch, first you should get a heavy duty water storage container, water purification tablets, energy bars, first aid kits, emergency radio, face masks, a headlamp and lantern, backup emergency candles or lights, a whistle to signal, a power inverter for your car, and a container to store everything. In addition to that though, we’ll outline a few other important items to have here.

First is water. Always have this, at least a gallon of water per person each day, in order to cover drinking water and basic needs of hygiene. If you’re not prepared, you should make sure that you have enough water in your water heater, toilet tank, and also fill up your bathtub. The water in your toilet is actually safe to drink, but don’t just rely on that.

Next are water packs. Having one is good, but getting some of the big containers such as the 7-gallon Aqua -trainer tank is good too. There are other carriers too, about 5 and 3.5 gallons respectively, which can hold a lot of water. Of course, the 7-gallon version holds a week’s worth of water per person. These also have break-proof handles that are comfortable with use. The reliance ones have a spigot that’s in the cap, which reduces the risk of smashing and cracking. The Aqua-trainer ones are the most reliable ones though.

Water potability is another big thing. You should always have these. The pouches that you get should be flexible, tough, and slim enough that you can pack them. They also have a five-year expiration date. There are many different water pouches out there, but you should make sure that you have some of these.

You should make sure that chlorine dioxide tablets are used too since they’re the best for this.

Energy bars are another part of this. You can get survival meals, but there are some that are very quick to expire, and usually, they’re filled with sugar and carbs. Clif bars are your best option since they can have the nutrients that you don’t’ get with full meals. They’re also very quick to get, and they’re the best replacement and energy bars on the market.

Finally, a can opener. There are a lot of these on the market, but you should get one that’s easy to use, and you know how to use it. You should always try to get one that is manual too, because you may not be able to use it if their’s no electricity.

You should make sure that you keep this with your food, since you might be eating canned goods for a little while, and this will help prevent you from getting too hungry, and also stave all of that off.

With that being said, here is everything that you need in order to prepare for any and all emergency situations. There’s’ a lot that goes into preparing for these kinds of emergencies, and you can, with this as well, get the most that you can out of this that’s possible, and everything that you can.

How to Build a Basic Disasters Supply Kit

Do you sometimes wonder if you’re ready for the worst? You should always make sure that you have all of the items listed in the checklist below.  Most of them are pretty easy to get, and don’t cost all that much, and some of them are so small that they could save your neck.

There are a few things that you should definitely get, but also, if you have pets, or even older people and families, then you’ll definitely want to make sure that you have everything on hand for any emergency.

You also need to make sure that you pack for at least several days, and you should have supplies, including water and food, that last up to 72 hours too. Disaster supplies kit is a lot of basic items that you may need in the event that emergencies happen, and that’s something you should definitely consider.

What Supplies do you need.

Well, you should first and foremost make sure that you have airtight plastic bags that are filled with disaster supplies in a couple of containers, or in a duffel bag.

Water is your first thing that you need. Have a gallon per person per day for up to three days, not just for drinking, but sanitation too.

The same goes for food, you need at least three days of non-perishable food.  You also should have some sort of radio, whether batter powered or hand-cranked, and you can get it with some alerts and such for the worst.

Flashlights or signals such as a whistle or mirror, are great to have as well in the event of an emergency.

The worst does happen, so you should also make sure that you do have various first aid kit supplies, along with extra batteries that are there for you to have on hand.

A dust mask or a filter is also good because it will help with filtering contaminated air and plastic especially if you know you’re in an area with compromised air.

Moist towelettes, plastic ties, and various garbage bags are also good things to have on hand especially if you know that you want to take care of your personal sanitation.

Wrenches and pliers are good for turning off utilities. You don’t know how bad it’s going to be, and the last thing you need is a gas leak on top of everything else, right?

Maps of not just the local area, but other places as well are definitely worth checking out, and you should try to at least have some of the local area, since that’s usually where people get into emergency situations.

Cell phones are important too, since usually the reason why people struggle with survival is, they don’t have enough juice. But, don’t fully rely on this, because usually, if you a=rely too much on this, it can end up being a problem since the towers do go out.

To maintain your kit, you should keep the food that’s canned in a place that’s dry and cooled. Store any food that’s boxes in a tight, closed plastic or a metal container.  You should replace items that expire as needed. You should also look at the needs you have each year, updating your kit as the needs change, such as maybe for kids you have to pack extra stuff for them.

You should always check for the water and the canned perishables too, since those do end up going bad over time, and it’s better to ensure that you’re taking care of this, and you’re doing what you feel is right.

Tips To Ensure Hurricane Readiness

High winds, heavy rainfall, massive flooding, and rip currents make up only a part of destruction that hurricanes can make. These violent storms are formed over water and they move towards the land, posing serious threat to the waterfront homes and businesses.

Thus, it is quite important to ensure proper preparedness for hurricanes so that the structures and families could remain safe before the storm strikes. There are a few measures that need to be taken into consideration in this regard. Some of those measures include the following.

Protecting your family

  • First, you are going to have to stock up the supplies which you may need during a disaster situation. Those items mainly include non-perishable foods, water, clothing, flashlights, batteries, and other beneficial items which may be required during the time of emergency.
  • Power outage is a logical consequence that tends to happen in cause of a weather emergency. Therefore, you have to make sure that you have access to the battery powered radio. This way, you will be able to get updates about weather emergency in the area.
  • Make sure that you have your important documents, maps, and medications with you in case of emergency.
  • Learn if there is an emergency evacuation plan. You can get this information from local emergency management office.

Protecting your pets

  • Your emergency survival kit should include any carrier or crate with emergency pet supplies such as blanket, pet food, and food serving dishes. If your pet requires any medication, make sure that you have it in the kit.
  • You need to secure the pet. Make sure that they are wearing their ID collars. You are going to have to keep their information up-to-date.

Protecting your home

  • You will need to bring in the home the outdoor furniture, decorations and everything which may be at the risk of being carried away by strong winds.
  • It is very important to clean the gutters and downspouts to prevent flooding and overflowing.
  • If you have got enough time to secure your home, you need to secure the windows with the help of storm shutters or plywood. You can cut the wooden board right according to the size of your windows and use those boards for window protection.
  • Broken branches and debris can be quite damaging for the exterior of your home. Therefore, you need to trim the trees and shrubs around your home.
  • You need to have an electric generator to produce power in case of the power outage.
  • Your vehicles need to be fully fueled. This way, you will be able to get out of the area quickly after the weather emergency is announced.
  • Make sure that you are fully familiar with the hurricane evacuation routes.

How to Pack an Emergency Survival Kit

Evacuations are happening during most hurricanes, and you should always understand that with all of the different natural disasters in place, it’s never too early to talk to your family about the emergency plans.  The emergency go-bag should always be one of the primary focuses of this discussion of course.

Now, depending on the area you live in, some of the natural disasters include tornadoes, wildfires, hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, even terrorist attacks are all things to consider.  You should pack for all of these. You should build an emergency supply kit not just for temporary means, but also something you can grab right away when you need it.

Your Basics

Minimally, you should always have food, water, a battery or a hand-cranked radio, batteries, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.  From there, you should also build it based on how many people you have in your home, or pets as well.

Water is your first thing you should have on hand. Stock away, and purchase pouches of water or potable water in the event of an emergency.  It’s best to carry you the filtration system, and you should make sure that you minimally have a filer as long as you have access to water that runs.  If you’re someone who wants to stash gallons of water, then great, but the thing is, I’s so much easier with a basic water filtration system.

Water purification tablets are a weightless alternative, but again, you will need a lot of these, whereas the filtration system might be good if you already have everything.

You should make sure that you have three days’ worth of food, whether it be survival food bars that contain your daily calorie limit, or just a few cliff bars or other energy bars if you want something that’s a little more palatable.

Lighting and a Whistle

Like they always say, let there be light, and tea candles and flashlights are probably the best for a home or dwelling if you need t a lot of light in places.

However, fi the space is compact, and you need your hands, you should minimally get a headlamp.

Some people don’t even realize how important lights are, but at night, even small problems will become bigger problems if you don’t know what you’re doing. Flashlights are handy, but headlamps are your best. You can get about 200 hours of light on these too.

You also should minimally have a whistle. This is more important for those survival situations where you’re lost, especially if you can’t get cellular service, or the battery poops out. Signal whistles are great for alerting others of your location, and are wonderful for locating other people if the situation becomes a hazard.

Dust Mark and Solar Chargers

Two things that people don’t usually remember are these. But, in events where you’re working with structures, the debris, the fumes, or even gas leaks can cause respiratory issues. In the event of a fire, it can also affect your ability to breathe. Surgical or painter’s masks usually work well if you’re on a budget, but there are also other models that are a bit pricier that will filter out a lot of the little particulates, and they tend to last longer. Look at what you need to filter out the air best, and then buy the mask that you’ll use.

Solar chargers are another one that you should use, and oftentimes, they can charge your devices such as phones and tablets with a days’ worthof fun. Rechargeable battery packs are your best option, and it’s a good thing to have on hand. But, one of the downsides to these types of chargers s that you may have outdated and old batteries, so you can definitely make it so that you have the right batteries on hand in the event that you might lose power.

There are also other items that you might need too, especially medications and prescriptions, especially those that are used to keep you alive, along with medical items that might be necessary, such as blood pressure monitors and glucose monitors that you might need. Diabetes especially will need this too, and if you have glasses, pack a spare if you can, have sanitary napkins and towelettes, paper maps of your locale, tweezers, scissors, some duct tape, watches that are wind resistant, change, cash, and traveler’s checks in the event shat you may have to travel a little bit in order to stay safe.

What about for One Person

For those of us who are alone, you have to be prepared. The goal for the singular person is to find friends and family, and you should have both evacuation and communication plan, and you should sit down with the family and discuss it out, and also share with colleagues and friends what you need in the event that something was to happen, such as someone outside your immediately family is a able to track you down.

Along with the basics, there are a few things that those who are alone needed to have on hand.

First, you need a multi-tool, and they can do everything from help you with first aid to even making fires and repairing your electronics.  You can get one that comes with a sharp knife, a pair of pliers, and some tweezers or even a can opener in many cases.  You should look for one that you can use for pretty much any situation. The immense power of these is amazing to behold, and you should realize what it is that you’re using in each case.

You should also have extra clothing. Pack for the climate with the weather you experience the most. From another coat and gloves to even more walking shoes.  You’ll want to make sure that you have a base layer, insulation layers such as puffy jackets or a fleece hooded sweatshirt or vest, and then finally the wind and rain-resistant, but along with that breathable, layers as well. Have all of this on hand, especially if you live in a place that’s susceptible to these types of emergencies.

Finally, we discussed this before, but you need a weather or emergency radio that can tune to both AM and FM signals along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration channel. In the event of emergencies, especially those with weather related concerns, the radio is your best one for weather partners, orders of evacuation, or even news from your local authorities. Portable, powered radios are great for keeping yourself connected with the world outside, even if you’re in a shelter or stuck in a cellar. There are so many different types, and they can work based off a battery, hand crank, solar energy, or even USBs.

No matter what you get though, this is the basics that you should have on hand. For families, you might want to consider other items such as mylar blankets for everyone, bleach to help keep everything that’s in your home and to treat waters, and waterproof containers for everyone’s valuable documents. This is all very important.

Have all this on hand, and you’ll be ready for everything.
