Tips to Survive a Wildfire

Wildfires happen everywhere in the US, but mostly out west. In the first six months of 2015, there were over 30,000 different wildfires, burning up a total of three million acres. Whenever lightning strikes, these wildfires can be created, or they can happen from human action, but all of which are terribly destructive. The worst one was the Oakland fire of 1991 that happened in California, and it claimed the lives of 25 people, burning nearly 3000 homes and costing almost 2 billion dollars of damage.  They can happen quickly, so make sure that you’re prepared.  The sequoias actually need fires to spread their seeds, so sometimes they’re purposefully set, but all of which are fast, and incredibly dangerous.

Never fight a wildfire, you can’t do that. Let the professionals do that.  You should make sure firewood is stored away from the home, and make sure all of the dead foliage in the gutter is cleared away, and any vegetation that may prove a fire risk is removed from the home. You should close windows and vents to prevent embers and smoke from entering. Always have a medical or emergency kit on hand, and take some water to the walls, since it will make it harder for the structure to catch fire.

If there is one, always go to higher ground, and have an emergency kit ready, containing both meals and water, put in there.  You will want to check with evacuation teams to figure out the route that you need to take, and from there, you should do it.  You should do everything it takes to stay away from the fire, and avoid inhalation of smoke as you navigate towards higher ground.

Now after a wildfire, typically there is a lot of devastation, and there may even be secondary fires that happen.  You should wait for the local authorities to give that all-clear message. From there, contact your insurance agent, and let them know fo any damages, and make sure you avoid any downed power lines, and try not to inhale the smoke that’s there, this can be hard, especially if you’re in an area that was greatly affected, but it can be possible to do.

When it does come to wildfires, you need to get out of there as fast as you can, since if that smoke travels and gets into your lungs, it can mean curtains for you. You should have an evacuation route planned, along with emergency supplies that can make evacuation plans to get out of there.

Wildfires are no joke, and knowing how to be prepared could potentially save your life. If you’re worried about the potential for a wildfire to strike in your area, you should make sure that you have the emergency evacuation plans in place to get out of there in a quick and effective manner, and do everything that you need to do in order to ensure the safest and best results that you can get.

Tips for Surviving a Hurricane

Hurricanes are incredibly strong and powerful, and in some cases, not only are they life-threatening, but they can cost billions in property damage, and the largest disaster of 2012 was hurricane sandy, costing $65 billion in terms of damage. While they do vary in strength, they can be quite worrisome. Usually, those over a three can be a bit much, such as in the case of hurricane Katrina.  Knowing how you can prepare yourself and others for this type of hurricane can help with limiting the damage, and also keeping you nice and safe.

These are often commonly referred to as cyclones and typhoons abroad, but they’re basically storms that cause flooding, rains, high winds, and heavy surf.  Usually, these can vary in power.

To prepare for this, you need to know beforehand when they may hit.  Usually, the national weather service is very on point with these, and if they issue a hurricane warning, it means that it’s coming.  You should make sure that you have gas, water, and power all shut off, and store everything in emergency packages, and make sure that you fill up sinks and bathtubs with water as necessary. Make sure that the driveway and lawn are free of debris and larger items. Close all of the windows and cover them with plywood or storm shutters, and make sure your car is packed with fuel and a medical kit.

When it does strike, you can either evacuate, or if you can’t, you can remain in your home. If you choose to sit tight, you should seek out a part of the house above the floodline that doesn’t have windows, and in a pinch, you can always go to the bathtub for shelter. You should make sure that the power is off, and use a radio to keep track of everything. Always stay out of the storm until you get the all-clear message.

Next, after it’s all over, make sure that you wear waterproof clothing and shoes, and refrain from plugging in appliances until you’ve checked with your utility company, and don’t turn on power either. Always avoid standing water when you can, and steer clear of any dangerous downed power lines or debris.  Floods can also increase the likelihood of the disease spreading, so make sure that you retain personal hygiene, and if you can, seek out the immunizations for yourself, and for others.

While the three or above hurricanes can cause a lot of damage, if you know the basics and are prepared, you can keep yourself and others safe whenever disaster hits. By making sure that you do this, you can increase your chances of actually surviving these disasters, and in turn, you’ll be able to, with the right preparedness, prevent the worst from happening, and save not just yourself, but others as well, so it is in your best interests to be prepared for these as much as you can, and take caution when there is a warning.

What to Do If there Is a Tsunami Warning

coastal communities suffer from tsunamis, large waves that can cause other issues, including landslides, eruptions, and earthquakes. Given that they are typically caused by events that are hard to predict, it’s hard to know when one will strike. So, if you live in a region that could be subjected to this, you should prepare for this over time.

Now, tsunamis are larger wave surges that are caused either by earthquakes or eruptions of volcanoes. This causes a large amount of water that is displaced to hit land.  This is typically seen in the Pacific more than anything, and it has been happening for more than two millennia, probably much more.

Now, to prepare for this, you essentially need to know the evacuation route. Most of the coastal communities will have governments that tell you the evacuation routes that are planned, so you should know where they are and get to them as quickly as they can.  They typically aren’t clean breaking waves that you see, and they’re basically chaotic walls of water that grow when they hit land, and they can have a height of over 50 meters in some cases.

Usually as well, shortly after there are other larger waves, so you should get out of your home during a tsunami warning, and you should have your car packed with dehydrated meals and water, and take an emergency survival kit with medical supplies in case you don’t have a chance to reach shelter beforehand.

So what do you do if you don’t have the ability to relocate, you should seek high ground immediately. While they can’t be predicted, if you notice that the waters are receding dramatically, exposing the fish, rocks, and large parts of the ocean floor, that’s a sign to get to higher ground.  don’t seek shelter within homes or residences if you can’t, since you can’t really survive it. Instead, find a hotel or office and climb the floors quickly.

These typically happen in waves, and you should stay in there till you get an all-clear message, and follow the evacuation orders that the government agencies have. don’t return to any building within the impact zone until the danger is going on.

If you are anywhere near a tsunami warning is happening, you should make sure that you get out of there. that’s the biggest thing because they are so unpredictable, but if you look at the different emergency routes, or purchasing a kit for your car, you can markedly increase the chances of survival in many cases, and make it better.

These are hard to prepare for, but you should know the best way out, and which buildings are best to get to if you need to.  it’s best to just get to higher ground before anything else, and know these waves can get high, so you should try to get away from them before things get worse, and for your own safety as well too.

Are you Prepared for Tornado Season

While they can happen at any time of the year, they typically can start as early as March. If you live in a downtown area of a major city that’s immune to tornadoes, you should know a bit about the area that you’re in, and how to prepare for that disaster.  People can die in these disasters, and you definitely want to make sure that you’re informed of how to get out in the event of these.  You can use the EF scale to identify how intense the tornadoes are.  Usually, if there is minimal damage, EF0 is the worst, but the EF5 tornadoes can cause destruction of structures.

The most common areas for tornadoes are Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Kansas as well. Tornadoes strike those states in the spring or the early summer.  You typically see these start off as a gray or a white cloud, but after a bit, it starts to go black due to the debris picked up by it.  A tornado in Oklahoma destroyed an entire motel, and the destruction was actually found in Arkansas.

A thousand tornadoes kill dozens of people, and there are more tornadoes in the US than any other country, and they can actually tear through different states at a very high speed.

Now, how do you prepare for these? Well, listen to the weather and subscribe to those emergency alerts if you know something is about to go bad.  You need to know the difference between a watch and a warning, which means the conditions are favorable for the severe storms to produce a tornado, and a warning means that a tornado was spotted on the radar.  If you’re wondering if you’re going to see a tornado, you should look for a green, dark sky and some rotating clouds.  Usually, large hail or a roaring sound like a train accompanies this, but not all tornadoes come with the warning noise, so you should look for the other symptoms

You should make sure that if nothing else, keep a supply of water, nonperishable food, and a can opener in the storm shelter, and a place for you to go to in the even to a tornado. You should also make sure that you have a car emergency supply kit with emergency supplies, first aid medications, and the like, and you should keep it in a box that’s fortified because of how strong these tornadoes are.

You should make sure that you have flashlights, and some copies of important documents in there too.  You should also make sure that any lawn furniture and objects before a big storm are secured, since they can fly around, causing injury and damage. You should try to stay below the ground in interior spaces too, or try to use a bathtub or close and cover yourself with a blanket or padding.

These are a little more predictable than other natural disasters, but it’s important to watch for the signs too.

The Best Ways to Overcome Cabin Fever

Cabin fever is a saying that a lot of people say, but they may not know what it is.  it’s essentially a state of boredom, anxiety, or restlessness, that comes from a  prolonged stay in a confined or remote place. it’s been in our vocabulary for at least 100 years, originated between 1915 to 1920, but there is a chance that it might’ve been a little bit earlier.  it’s quite interesting to hear, but lots of times it happens during the winter months when people are forced to stay indoors. it’s definitely hard to imagine how people coped with this years ago, especially without the internet, but here are some ways to overcome cabin fever, especially without high-tech gadgets and other resources.

The first is to be creative. There are coloring books that you can get, but you can also work with clay, drawings, glitter, or even sewing.  it’s fun to get creative, and it can help.

Then there is indoor gardening. This is a way to really get creative because it’s good for you to use, but it also is useful.  If you do grow colorful plants, you can brighten a bleak winter day, and really help with this.  If you tend to plants while you’re indoors, it ca be super therapeutic, even if it’s just a tiny garden that you’re throwing together.

Listening to music is a good way to help you relax, and I also can spawn some creativity. You also can go outside.  Usually, unless the temperatures are dangerous, there are heavy winds, or severe weather, going outside can be quite beneficial for you. Plus, it will help you get vitamin D, which is usually what people are deprived of during the winter.  You can also get some regular exercise as well, such as walking around or even taking a brisk walk, or dance to music or even do a light workout.  If you can make it to the gym, it might be good to try that.

But, you should also know that cabin fever isn’t SAD. SAD is that feeling of sadness and lack of energy, and it’s a form of depression. Most are sensitive to light if they have SAD, so they will have depression, and it will decrease the serotonin levels, and melatonin levels. This can be quite frustrating to deal with, and usually, they need light therapy and psychotherapy. Cabin fever is mostly just feeling bored because you have stayed inside all day, and while that can normally be fixed with well, going outside or just doing something, SAD is a much more detailed issue, and it can be more frustrating to deal with than cabin fever may be.

It can be hard during the winter months to really be out there and moving, but with the right ideas, and the right wellness in place, you’ll be happier with this, and it’s important to understand that, with the right mindset, it can be healthier for you too.

Disaster Preparedness to Consider

The natural disasters that happen often bring forth the idea that you should know how to craft a family disaster plan to help you. Many people don’t really think ahead, and they don’t take the necessary precautions. But, planning is super important, and you should know what to do when an emergency happens, steps to take if you need to evacuate, and how to communicate to others that you’re safe.

When it comes to evacuation, you should know the best routes to take, and where to stay. Most communities have shelters, but you should create a backup plan since shelters do reach full capacity. You should contact your local emergency management if you want more information.

Then there is the disaster supply kit.  A first aid kit, medications, tool kits, disposable lighters, matches, a flashlight, or even some chargers, personal care items, and critical documents should all be on hand when you’re about to leave.  You should also consider a flash drive or hard drive for valuable documents, and you can store this in a fireproof box to protect it.

You should also have emergency supplies in your home. Sometimes, if you’re out during a storm you’ll need to use your kit, but if you’re at home, you may lose power, water, or not be able to leave due to the roads being blocked or flooding. You should stock this with long shelf-life items and at least a gallon of water a day per person, and enough supplies for everyone, especially the pets.

Finally, you need to communicate with the family about what to do when a disaster happens. While it doesn’t’ happen a lot, you need to focus on this.  If you have children or elderly relatives that are in nursing homes, you need to figure out how they’re going to respond, and how you can take the right precautions to get them in the event of this. If the children are in school, the parents should have teachers that will take care of them, but it is best to know from the school directly what their emergency steps may be.  It definitely is something that you should consider, because not every school may have the best precautions in place, and it definitely is something that yo9u need to consider when you’re looking to plan your emergency care systems for you and your family.

You never know when a disaster may strike, and there is a lot at hand that can happen, and a lot of variables. That is why you need to take the time to ensure that you have the right protections in place and the right precautions that are implemented. The right choices and the right ideas will help you with improving your overall happiness and wellness. It can change the way you’re able to do a lot of what you’re currently doing, and it can help especially if you know that there are disasters that are to be had for you too.
